One of the best New York-style delis in the Valley is in Surprise. I'm going to rack up the miles this winter schlepping for its chicken soup.

Archie's Deli is owned and run by the Wright family from Detroit, who are not Jewish but grew up eating great deli food in the Midwest, where they were in the restaurant business for many years. A few years back, they moved to Phoenix and opened a deli at 59th Avenue and Thunderbird, which they closed when they moved to Surprise last February.

Specialty of the House: Al's Excuse - avocado spread, spicy fire-roasted green chile, tomato, Muenster on grilled farm bread. Served with cole slaw or potato salad and choice of pickle.

Most Popular Appetizer: Potato Latke - handsome thick potato pancakes. Served with homemade applesauce or sour cream.

It may not sit on a busy urban street corner, but Archie's Delicatessen & Restaurant in Surprise has a New York deli vibe going on. The deli sits back off the northeast corner of Bell Road and North Litchfield in an unassuming strip mall.

Archie's claims to have the 'best sandwich in town' and appears to live up to that motto. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the refrigerated deli cases are right up front displaying desserts, meats and cheeses.
